SCBWI Western Washington Regional Programming

SCBWI Western Washington regional programming runs from September 1st to August 31st of each year (regardless of the time of year you sign up). Available to SCBWI International members or nonmembers alike, SCBWI WWA regional programming includes a passport to our monthly Professional Series Meetings, the SCBWI WWA quarterly print newsletter, and our weekly e-newsletter—in addition to local networking opportunities and regional extras.

The cost is only $35 for SCBWI International members (full or associate) and $40 for nonmembers—an incredible bargain considering all that you get for the price. For instance, to attend individual Professional Series Meetings as a visitor, you’d pay $8 (members) or $10 (non-members) per meeting. Attending even a handful of the eight meetings we’re holding this year makes up for the price of our regional programming. Plus, paying for regional programming ensures that you’ll also receive our incredibly useful quarterly newsletter, The Chinook, and be able to submit events or other content for the Chinook Update blog.

SCBWI WWA regional programming for the 2009-2010 year includes:

  • Your passport to Professional Series Meetings: Moving to a new day of the week this year, SCBWI WWA will host monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of every month from September through May, excluding April (when we’ll hold our annual conference instead). These Professional Series Meetings typically include two 45-minute sessions or a 30-minute “mini-session” and a 60-minute main program, with a brief business meeting between. We bring in at least one professional speaker for each program, and sometimes several panelists, such as the writers on the YA panel planned for December. At January’s unique and popular meeting, we host “The Great Critique”—the ultimate critique experience, in which seasoned writers and illustrators lead small groups to provide feedback on your work. We have quite a lineup for the 2009−2010 program year! For complete details, see Monthly Meetings.

  • The Chinook quarterly printed newsletter: This high-quality, 20-page quarterly newsletter provides craft articles, meeting and workshop summaries, a calendar of events and classes, and much more.

  • The Chinook Update blog: A supplement to The Chinook, this blog compiles important, time-sensitive news, market updates, and information about children’s books and the people who create them. The editor scours various industry publications, blogs, bookstore sites, and more to provide a convenient summary and links.

When you pay for regional programming, you’ll also receive:

  • Critique group support: Get help finding a critique group—face-to-face or online.*

  • Advance notice of events: After SCBWI International members, you’ll receive advance notice about the many valuable programs we offer throughout the year, such as our annual conference, master classes, professional retreats, and the Inside Story.*

  • Local networking and connections: SCBWI WWA regional programming helps you stay up to date, keeping you in touch with peers and professionals to help you hone your craft and market your work.*

  • Submission rights for the Chinook Update blog: An online supplement to The Chinook, this electronic news blog, updated almost daily during our programming season and weekly during the summer, compiles important, time-sensitive news, market updates, and information about children’s books and the people who create them. When you pay for regional programming, you can help shape the Chinook Update and promote your career by submitting your own publication news, event invitations, classes, and other contributions.

* Members of SCBWI International automatically receive these SCBWI WWA regional extras, too, but must pay in order to receive regional programming. Please note that paying for SCBWI WWA regional programming does not make you a member of SCBWI International. (See www.scbwi.org for information about joining SCBWI International.)
